What is so great about Copperhead? There are lots of other mud motors out there, Mud Buddy. Go Devil, Scavanger and others in the market place. I have had a couple of them, but never a Copperhead. Now it seems that Copperhead is becoming the most wanted mud motor. What is different about them that causes them to rise to the top. Bud

Bud,
I looked into buying a Copperhead a couple years ago (and didn't get one), so my info isn't really up to date, but here goes: Copperhead has a niche in the market because most of the big mud motors are really heavy and are too much for smaller boats (under 16'). They make lighter, smaller motors at lower cost.
Since they came onto the market some other companies have come out with similar models (Dixie, Orion, etc), which is good for the consumer, but I don't really know how all of these stack up against one another. Copperhead has had the longest to work on props, trim, and so forth, so maybe they have figured more of the quirks out than their competitors. Copperheads are supposed to be pretty durable and reliable, but I'd be interested to hear what other people have to say who have more experience with them.

Weight. They were the first to build a small light weight unit, their primary engines are the LCT motors which are essentially the same motors harbor freight sells under the predator badge so parts and performance upgrades are readily available. In their v twin units they are roughly 100 lbs lighter than any other manufacturer. Combine that with incredible customer service, and that's the reasons as I see them.
Dixie in a few short years has gone thru 2 owners, and is now closing the doors.
Orion is all over the place with engine choices and different models.... And not a lot of feedback out there from owners to know if they are good or bad.
I would have liked to have a GTR 23, but having reverse wasn't worth the 100lb penalty to me. It's just a extra 100lbs that I have to horse off the sand.

I cant say enough about copperhead I had a 13 horse which wouldnt run right for some reason. Copperhead gave my a new 12 horse to use until my 18 horse comes in. They also put the money I had on the 13 horse towards my 18 horse and paid for half of the shipping cost. Dont know of any other company that would do that.Is it opening day of duck season yet
