Can you burn a scent for black bear hunting if you do NOT have a bait site/permit etc?

I was thinking that I read that you cannot use scents for hunting them unless you have a site. I skimmed the regs last night and cannot find my answer one way or the other. Can you help close this discussion? We were talking about while getting sunburned on PWS last Sunday.

I think you're correct - that its not permitted. Check the definition of "bait". Scent ONLY seems to be legal, but I think the burning of a substance would remove it from the "scent" only catagory - even if the bear did not inhale.

Illegal. In the regs somewhere. Scent lure is bait! Need to be registered for sure! Page 27, a paragraph above middle of page. Definfation of bait, is pertaining to all hunting, not baiting. Scent lures are legal for moose and such. Scent lures are "bait" for bears, thus needing to be registered as described on said page and paragraph. Don't get busted over a simple mistake.

Actually this is what is defined as bait:

          not quoted but retyped...

Bait - any material, excluding scent lures, placed to attact an animal by its sense of smell or taste; bait does not include those parts of legally taken animals that are not required to be salvaged as edible meat if the parts are not moved from the kill site.

So - what is a scent lure?

I sometimes use elk scent lure that I blot onto a paper towel and stick in my boot when elk hunting.

What about an incent burning rather than a honey burn?

I don't plan to do any scenting - we spot and stalk for black bear, but am still curious.

What about cooking a shore lunch to make BLT's......all bears love BLT's!

Illegal, you MUST have a baiting permit to use scent lures to hunt black bears.

            Page 18 of the regulations.

Scent lures may be used for ungulates, and for black
bears ONLY under a black bear baiting permit.

I think you are in the wrong forum! Baiting bears or using scents to attract them is NOT hunting them. This is the hunting forum! You need to be in the shooting forum or the BAITING forum.

                  Funny guy...

Illegal unless you have a bait permit for the location.
