Gov.-elect Sarah Palin has picked a former Anchorage police chief as her new public safety commissioner, and named two others with experience in the Gov. Frank Murkowski administration for cabinet jobs.

Palin on Tuesday announced that Walt Monegan, 55, newly retired from the state’s largest municipality, will oversee the Department of Public Safety.

She said Monegan will oversee a return to officers designated as Alaska State Troopers or as Fish and Wildlife Enforcement officers, reversing a policy implemented by outgoing Gov. Frank Murkowski.

The Murkowski administration combined under one commander the Alaska State Troopers “blue shirts,” who patrol towns and cities and provide police protection, with the troopers’ Division of Fish and Wildlife Protection, the “brown shirts” who safeguard fish and wildlife.

Palin also announced the appointment of Marty Rutherford, 55, as acting commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources.

Rutherford is a former deputy commissioner and one of six high-ranking members of the department who resigned in October 2005 after then-commissioner Tom Irwin was forced out the job. Irwin had written a memo questioning the legality of state concessions to oil producers during contract negotiations for a natural gas pipeline.

Palin also announced her Department of Corrections commissioner: Joe Schmidt, 41, the superintendent of the Point Mackenzie Correctional Farm. Schmidt has nearly 20 years experience in the department.

Palin said more appointments could be announced later this week.
