Might be a bit early still? Buddy is driving down from ANC today & taking the ferry over to ADQ. He has blocked out 15 days if need be for Dead Man Bay. Another guy I know will be heading over shortly as well for Kiluda Bay. I wish I was going but a nasty four letter word got in the way! "WORK". I am sure someone went a bit earlier & has a good story to share.

I can't imagine it being too early. I killed a bear on Kodiak three years ago on the 23rd of April (today's date) and I saw almost 20 bears on that trip.

        Tomorrow........

I'm heading down tomorrow morning (24th) with my buddy, to look for a bear with him. We are planning on getting back on May 3rd (maybe earlier if we get lucky). I hope that we will have some good pictures for everyone!!
Good luck to everyone else heading down that way.

                    Deadman Bay

snow level at about 300' several nice bears spotted up high with the goats. 1 small bear taken by res on 21st at 500' guide says looks grim for early hunters

Have Tom's early hunters been having any luck? Doesn't sound like it so far.

I sure enjoyed hunting Deadman and hope I am fortunate enough to draw another permit for that area sometime.

I'm currently working part time at Barney's. Had a customer come in today on his way out from a Kodiak hunt. He took a 9'4" or 9'6" bear on the south end of the island. I forget the bay.

                            Watch the snow conditions

I drove out the road down past Pasagshack last weekend stopping and glassing/spotting the slopes along the way. Didn't see a single set of tracks the whole way. Normally they're easy to see even up high as they sidehill the snowy slopes. Still quite a bit of snow, BUT this past week has been warm with some rain too. Lost a LOT of snow. I would have loved to go looking today, but had other things I had to do.

Those of you going out, be VERY CAREFULL on the snowy slopes. The heavy wet snow has broken loose on many of the mountain slopes. You've seen it before....big surface slabs of snow that broke loose in a slide. I'd hate to see one of you hunters buried in one of those slides. So use your heads, and check the snow conditions. Getting a bear ain't worth it.

                            With that said, good luck!

I went over to Sharatin bay this afternoon for a little subsistence waterfowl and did a little glassing and didn't see any tracks up high or down low. There is still a good amount of snow over in that area.
