  • Hunt Alaska magazine

Did anyone else get a complimentary copy of this new magazine? I haven't sat down and read it yet but have perused through it some and like what I have seen. I'll probably subscribe to it since I have been hoping they (Fish Alaska) would produce one for hunting.

I got mine a week or so back, and I hate to say, I was not overly impressed. Personally to many ads, and I have never been a huge fane of Scott Haugen (I think that is his name). I truly like Alaska magazine and Trophy Hunter as well.

The ad guy calls me every couple weeks trying to get me to buy into this mag, i haven't seen it yet, but don't think this is where i want to advertise. specially now that someones come right out and and said to many ads, which is the biggest problem with just about every magazine, including FISH ALASKA.
Not a Haugen fan either....but he's one of their go to guys for the FISH mag...goes ta figger

Without ads it is not possible to print one of these magazines. Personally, I like the ads as 99% of them are Alaska based. To each his own I guess.

It's not unlike this site, really. The banner ads and forum sponsors are what keep this site online. Without ads, printing a nice magazine on quality paper with quality stories would be impossible. Subscription fees are just a drop in the bucket with regards to overall revenue needs for such a publication.

I haven't seen the magazine yet. I looked last night at the store, but it's not on the shelves yet.

How did you manage to score a complimentary issue?

            Hunt AK

Well I bought it...have not looked at it yet.
            Have not advertised in it....yet.

But perhaps this forum should advertise in it? Double the membership? Or not!

I picked up an issue and thumbed through it and was not impressed at at all. Scott Haugen toots his horn all the time about his record book trophies. The pictures of his Kodiak black tail are from a boat based hunt that was videoed for TV. He talked about being prepared to shoot, gut, skin, bone, cape and pack his trophy out by himself. I would be willing to pay good money to see him do all that by himself. Further in the magazine there is a picture of him dragging his deer and the caption is talking about grizzlies? I don't know an area with blacktails and grizzlies? Any body else? Brown bears yes! The other contributors of the magazine are from many other magazines. Also way too many ads! It is a nice rehashed magazine of editors and contributors of other magazines already produced. Nothing special in my opinion and am not going to to subscribe. It was for sale at Sportsmans in Anchorage yesterday

Wish I knew Brian, it just showed up in the mail yesterday and it had my wifes name on it so I don't know how we managed to get one for free. Seems to be a lot of heartburn against this Haugen fella, don't know him or anything about him but I will still subscribe for a year and see how it goes.

ya adds support a mag for sure, but at what point are they just selling adds and no longer selling a magazine? I've seen a few that were basicly just selling adds...content took a backseat to full page adds.
I took a Petersons Hunting and Field and Stream on a hunt once, we counted the number of full page adds, each was near 17, then we counted (yes it was bad weather...lol) the number of big game animal photos, different specie..each had around 4. 17 adds + 4 Diff. animal pics = me not reading it.

I won't subscribe to any hunting magazines anymore, seems all they care about are what the animals score and i'm not into that sort of thing. I counted the # of full sized ad's in the Hunt Alaska mag and counted 8 out of 83 pages. Lots of Alaska outdoor business' and such are avertising in it, along with Leupold, Winchester, Bowtech, Ruger, the AK State Troopers and a few others. No viagra or Cialis ad's though.........

                        CPM=cost per thousand advertising

The short story; the Fish Alaska Magazine publishers who are originally from the East Coast started their first magazine Fish Alaska by mailing out free copies to random mailboxes in hopes of generating interest and subscriptions. Same model applies here. Occasionally they still send out free Fish AK mags as I got one last year.
Brian already stated subscriptions only account for a small portion of the required revenue to keep a magazine this size going. But to be able to sell the ad space to potential advertising customers such as ALASKATRUEADVENTURE they need to have what they call “reach.” All (most all) advertising is based on the model of CPM = cost per thousand (the M is the Roman numeral for 1,000). CPM is a measuring model to help advertisers define how much it will cost their ads to reach a 1,000 people so they can compare apples to apples like say, it will cost me $5 dollars per 1,000 people I reach through TIMs outdoors show but it only costs $4 dollars to reach them through the magazine. This is called “Reach.” Now you have to decide the “Quality” of those two groups meaning which of the two groups of 1,000 people will actually respond to seeing that ad and make a purchase.

                        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPM

The magazine needs “reach” before it can set advertising rates just as a TV program needs ratings to set TV ad rates. If nobody watching or reading it doesn’t matter where you place you advertising monies. SO two things are happening right now w/the hunting magazine, they are building “reach” to support advertising rates and “subscriptions” base for both revenue and to build reach.

There's also one other item to consider when choosing advertising..."clutter" = how well does my ad stand out from all the other ads which you folks have already noticed in the new mag.

Boring perhaps but maybe this will help some folks here that have businesses and wrestle with making advertising decisions. I hope the magazine does well.

                          Free copy in MN

I received a free copy, and it helped pass the time on the flight back to AK after Christmas. I didn't think it was such a bad read. If you think the ads are bad, check out one of those girly magazines. I just checked my wife's People Mag, and there was readable text on just one of the first ten pages. What I did find interesting was I got my free copy just after Christmas, while at my parents house in MN. So whatever list they were using, it might be a year or two old. Not sure where they got the address from, but for a free magazine, I'm not complaining.

                            I like it.

I got mine yesterday and I really enjoyed it. Mostly because it is about hunting in ALASKA. I'm not interested in reading about whitetail hunting strategies for the 100th time, turkey hunting, hog hunting or shooting zebras in Africa. If those things interest you, than you are lucky, because you can read about them month after month in two dozen different magazines.

The only thing I don't like is that it looks to be a quarterly magazine. Twelve issues a year would be better.

I advertised in the Fish Alaska and had very good results, I've placed ads in some national publiscations with 0 results. With the world economy I feel I have to advertise even more.
