Location: Chicken Ridge - Unit 20E
    Case Number: 06-72515
Type: Take Moose Closed Season x 2
Text: On 8/13/06 at 0915 hours Tok ABWE Troopers were contacted near
mile 17 of the Chicken Ridge trail by numerous hunters reporting that
two men had just killed two young bull moose near mile 25 of the trail.
Suspect descriptions were obtained and at 1015 hours, Troopers located
the men as they were processing the animals. Investigation revealed
that the shooter, Robert J. Holthouse, 52 yoa of North Pole and his
hunting partner, ID'd as Johnathan A. Byrd, 33 yoa of Eielson, were
preparing to depart their camp when Holthouse saw two animals he thought
were Caribou. Holthouse was without his binoculars and stated his rifle
scope was fogged over. Holthouse began firing at the animals, killing
one and wounding the other. Holthouse stated upon getting to the
wounded animal he heard nearby hunters yelling at him that they were
Moose. The animals were salvaged and the group was escorted by ABWE to
the road where the animals were seized. Holthouse was issued two
citations for Take Game Closed Season and his rifle was seized. The
meat was donated to two charities in Tok. Arraignment is set for August
    21st. in Tok District Court.

I call major BS on that one!

That's complete BS and they know it. Come on now..."we thought they were caribou" BS! Two of them thought that 2 bull moose were caribou. What! That just gets me fired up. I'm glad they were caught and I hope they get hung out to dry!

      caribou hunters

Too bad whatever sentence they get will not cure their stupidity. Hunters like that are the most dangerous things in the woods.

It might be possible that an vbery inexperienced person with out binoculars and a fogged scope might make a mistake. But if you haven't clearly identified your target, why they heck did he start shooting anyway? Although innocent until proven, This looks like he shouldn't have been out there in the first place.

Where do you look up this information?

Just imagine if that big brown type object he was looking at through his fogged scope was two people standing side by side. The whole entire story smells fishy.

            on the other hand

Who would poach in an area loaded with hunters? Your true criminal type usually wants to get something for nothing and not get caught. And as you say, who is careless enough to shoot things they cannot clearly identify, that part has got to be posturing. A few years back some hunters were pinched for shooting short horned sheep they thought were goats, so anything is possible with so many new people coming into the country.

The two people standing side by side post is right. These guys should never be given a chance to hunt again if they are shooting through a foged scope. Are they shooting at somthing that far away they can't even tell the difference between a moose, man, bear ect. This is the thing that gives us all a bad name. Knotheads

                    Stupid

The worst part about stupid people is that they seem to reproduce at an alarming rate....I would guess that this is the case with these two fine citizens also....

                            im not impressed.

Ive turned down a shot at a huge moose that was within 20 yards just because it was a little too dark. Those guys have no excuse.

For background on this...I work with one of the guys....one guy shot both moose. My coworker was in the area, but did not shoot them. It was only one guy to blame on this. My coworker was just salvaging the meat to turn in since he knew what to do. I don't know the other guy or what he was thinking.
