  • Dont get complaisant with GMU 23 and 26A closures

This makes me sick to read, frankly. Where is the legal and ethical line between resource (support) and driver (scheduling) of subsistence priority agendas??????

Subject: Seeking your feedback on WSA21-01, requesting closure to caribou hunting by non-Federally qualified users in Units 23 and 26A

Dear Western Arctic Caribou Herd Working Group members,

Last week, I spoke with Jan and your Executive Committee about seeking WACHWG feedback on a caribou closure request for Units 23 and 26A that was made to the Federal Subsistence Board earlier this year.

The Federal Subsistence Board deferred decision-making on the closure request until more input could be received, including from your group. Your Executive Committee asked that my office (Office of Subsistence Management) reach out to all of you on the phone, then make a report to send back to all members, so that you can discuss the issue very briefly and vote on it at your December meeting.

The purpose of this email is to see when you might be available to speak to me or one of my colleagues in the next week or so. Unfortunately, our timeline is quick, because the Executive Committee asked that I get a report on everyone's feedback to Jan for mailing for your December meeting (by November 5th). We can keep our discussions fairly short. Basically, we'd just like to hear your opinion on the request (and can give you more info about it on the phone), as well as any concerns or suggestions for alternative solutions.

Please let us know if you are willing and when you might be available next week. We do have your phone numbers at hand.

    Sincerely,
    Hannah Voorhees

P.S. : Pollock, Steve, Wanda, and Enoch, Eva Patton will be the one calling you, if you are available.
Charles, Charlie, Tom, and Elmer, Karen Deatherage will be reaching out to you.
Neil, David, Jake, and Brad, Lisa Maas will be the one connecting with you.

I will be calling everyone else.

The WACH WG is a state entity. The state funds it mostly and provides the resources for a meeting. They used to meet in Anch. every year so all the members got a free trip and lodging there. Last 2 meetings and this one coming up are virtual only.
Most all the member of the WG are folks who live in the WACHs range. That means villages from Barrow south to Unalakleet I think. The deck is mostly stacked against non locals with this group. I would suggest anyone interested in this issue call Tony Gorn in Nome. He is the Region 5 coordinator for ADF&G. He has the figures and stats to show if a fed. ban on non locals is biologically justified. His number is 443-8189. You can bet the state won't be happy about another non local ban.
      I can't help being a lazy, dumb, weekend warrior.......I have a JOB!
      I have less friends now!!
