  • Kodiak Deer Question

Can anyone pinpoint when the deer lose their velvet on Kodiak? Early, mid, or late Sept?

    Thanks

In my experience Mid to late August.

anywhere from the second week of August to the first week or so of November...

seen a buck in 2006 with velvet remains in the second week of November- but he wasn't very large (dominate) in horn mass

and my smallest buck that year was still in velvet (first week of november)

Northern Southeast is usually the end of August to 1st week of Sept. I have hunted Sept 1-5 and we got one of each: 1 newly-peeled (bright red), 1 half-peeled, & 1 full velvet. I would guess Kodiak is 1-2 weeks earlier?

When I lived on Kodiak, it seemed most bucks lost their velvet from mid Aug until the first week of Sept. Occasionally you'd see a hard horned buck a little earlier or a velvet buck a little later. Then there were the sterile bucks from the south end and some of them would have velvet very late into the year.
An opinion should be the result of thought, not a substitute for it.
