No they are not legal. Too much incidental bycatch. I myself was attracted to such a stand one day and they are almost irresistable. This one happened to be a roasted porter and it was 12 hours before I could legally drive again. But I think in this case the stand is actually holding bear bait. Notice the tap and pump are removed!
I come home with an honestly earned feeling that something good has taken place. It makes no difference whether I got anything, it has to do with how the day was spent. Fred Bear

I like the stickers. What's the snow level comparison to this time last year would you say?

My buddy got the bait out this weekend while I was working in Anchor town. Last time we went in early, break up was late and when we finally got there the cupboard was cleaned out. This time we got a bit trickier. I found an 85 gallon overpack drum. The thing is huge! We find a bear that big and it is a keeper. He said he put in 300lbs of dog food plus lots of goodies to sweeten the meal. 55 gallon drums only hold about 200lbs, so we should be pretty well set. This drum also has much smaller holes so they'll have to work harder to get at the food.

A little more snow at the site this year. Snow was solid this year on the walk in. Last year is was very punchy, even with snowshoes on.
I figure it will soak for a good month before anything shows up.
Thanks for looking. I'll post pictures as soon as they are collected.

I want to put one of ADF&G's yellow "Keep Alaska's Bears Wild" sticker on my drum but I don't think F&G has a sense of humor.

How did you get the over pack in the field? I've been thinking about taking one from work but I think it'd b so hard to lug around it wouldn't be worth it. Is it a metal one or the big plastic overpacks with a screw lid?

As Blackbear (member of forum) said, it's a record year for early visits! I've been using Gel Balls, Black Death and Drag-Drip Scent, all in Anise flavor from Bait'em907. My bait was dog food soaked in Licorice Ice Cream (there was a thread about that).

The massive brownie cleaned me out in the first 24 hours, but I'm sure the lingering smells brought the black bear in on the 7th, a full week and a half ahead of schedule!

Apparently, cats like the smell of anise. Take note, trappers!

My first black bear checking out this year's COOL Stickers. LOL

This brownie is a TANK. We've watched him grow over the years. Imagine him in fall...

                            Enjoy,
                            Taylor
