  • K-Bay Tanners

Do you have to be a resident of Alaska to fish Tanners in Cook Inlet and K-Bay? I cant download the regs. Thanks for your help!

No. You need a sportfish license and a user permit from Fish & Game.

"Cook Inlet and North Gulf Coast Tanner Crab (see maps on pages 12 and 56)
Open July 15–March 15, • except in Kachemak Bay, which is open July 15–December 31 and January 15–March 15
Gear is limited to 2 pots per person, with a maximum of 2 pots per vessel •
Bag and possession limits are 4 legal-sized (5½ inches or greater in carapace width) male • Tanner crab a day (see page 11)
A permit is required• and is available at Anchorage, Soldotna and Homer ADF&G offices, and the Fish House in Seward"

Looks like page 63 shows the limt at 5 unless I misread. What are the success rates? Can you use a regular crab trap similar to the one attached Click image for larger version

Emergency Oder from June 6, 2010 says, in part: "For 2010 the bag and possession limit for Cook Inlet, including Kachemak Bay (Areas A, B, D, & E in Figure 1), is four legal-sized male Tanner crab per day." Still in effect, I believe.

standard gear is a pyramid-type pot at least 4' square. tanners are fished at depths between 4-500'.
success is generally pretty good, a fe days ago we pulled 2 pots and got 128 crab, of which 24 were keepers. there were 5 of us on the boat so we put 4 back.
yesterday we pulled one pot for 9 keepers, but the weather was so cold and icy we settled for 3 apiece and let the other pot soak.
there are several proposals regarding the homer tanner crab fishery coming up for discussion at the march shellfish meeting.
likely the season dates will change some, perhaps it will become a P/U fishery.

Sweet! Been pondering the prospect of crabbin' too but was unsure about how to go about it. I went back and researched some of the old forums and sounds like something I'd like to give a try. Glad I didn't get any of the Cabela's pots. I'll just wait until we get up there and check things out first hand. Anxious to hit the road north ~ soon, very soon...

May as well everything else is PU (stinky)
I remember the days of the 24 hr commercial derby in K-Bay well. I was a crewman and I made 5k on the 24hr k-bay derby and 800.00 for the rest of the month and a half long CI season. The skipper was apparently a sport crabber cause he liked to have us re-set gear off Aialik Cape after the gear came back full of rocks, box and hermit crab! I was like take me to town! ( I told the other deckhands the only way he's going to town is if we run out of bait, so we started doubling up on the bait jars shhh)

Thanks Dave for the info. I would think a personal use fishery would be good.
What exactly would that entail though? I understand that would make it residents only. I wonder if it would be like dipnetting though where one family member can catch the limit for their other family members even if the other family members are not present? I suppose not but I always dislike having to put those legal sized males back in the pot or having to release them when pulling my gear. All those crabs and not enough people in the boat to claim then all sometimes.
As for the season dates I sure hope they don't make it a winter only fishery like they have in PWS. I think that would shut a lot of people out of the fishery who put their boats up for the winter like I do.

Akluvr95 The pot in your picture is a dungy pot. Might work but I would just buy a pyramid pot like the ones made at the gear shed in Homer. I think they run about $120 each. I have had real good success with these pots.

Right on Chris, I will get the correct ones once we get up home. Never thought for a minute there'd be a chance to get Tanners close in. Excited more than ever now... Bet I won't know how to act eating them fresh from the sea.

Here's a couple of pics of the folding tanner pots i build. Pots are 36"x36"x18"
Second pic is with the pot sitting on the swim step on the stern of the boat. One of my customers told me he had 75 tanners for a 4 hour soak in one of my pots. Thanks for the plug Chris roud:

Not sure what you mean by close in? Although I will admit you don't have tpo go out a ong ways from Homer.
The picture with the crab was not taken where that crab was caught. I keep them in tub of seawater until I get home to cook them.
Heres the blue tote I use full of crabs with the pot sitting over the top of it.

I get these tubs cheap at walmart and they hold quite a bit of line. I paid about $5 last year for them. I like to keep them nice and lively until I am ready to butcher and boil them. If I clean them first I can fit more in the pot. I have a propane turkey fryer that I use to boil them in. Cleaned I can just squeeze 10 crabs in it but usually 8 is a good size batch.

These are what we stock. Vinyl dipped, stackable/nestable tanner pots, top loading entrance and opens on the bottom.

Had one customer even modify it and put in Neptune triggers on his:

I like the tunnels on your pots Steve. You could quickly alter the size of the tunnel opening for kings or easily put fingers on them for cod
