Gonna try
I am going to try to get out this weekend at least once. Thinking about hitting someplace close to Anchorage. I fished the base last weekend but would like to get out and learn the area a little.US Air Force - retired and Wildlife photographer

Thinking about taking my nephew out, but I'd like it to warm up a little bit - he's tough for a 7 year old, but I don't want it to be miserable. Sure hope it works out, though. The kid has had a rough year (deadbeat dad and a mom who has been going through cancer treatment), so I'd really like to do this with him. I took him once last year and he hasn't stopped talking about it. I offered to take him fishing in the summer, and all he could think about was ice fishing! Hope our next experience isn't a letdown after all this buildup. Thinking maybe Knik Lake or Finger Lake - somewhere where the fish are almost guaranteed, even if they're not big.

By the way, is the ice thick enough on the smaller lakes to drive on yet? I'm guessing no, but it's been awfully cold... Anyhow, I wouldn't mind taking my nephew fishing if I could have the truck right there for him to warm up in. Any info?

People are driving their vehicles on Jim Creek now, I would assume the lakes are thick enough to drive on while watching out for overflow and springs.
If you want a lake that is almost garaunteed to produce I would check out beach lake and mirror lake. Those two have almost always produced for myself and I have pulled some good sized fish from both of these lakes. If its unusually cold I head up to big lake. I drill a couple holes close enough to the driver and passenger doors to where you can fish from inside the truck with the windows rolled down.sigpic

Plenty thick
The lakes here on base have over 18 inches of ice on most of them. I am pretty sure that most of them should be close to that. Plenty to support any vehicle. Brian, Let me know when you are taking him out and maybe I can plan on it as well. I have a nice new shack and heater. It gets warm enough to roast you out of there if you leave the heater on all the time. I was shutting it off even when it was almost 10 below on base before daylight last weekend.US Air Force - retired and Wildlife photographer
