  • How about a crab/shrimp/shellfish thread

The fishing thread is very popular, and it encompasses a lot of topics. Sometimes that makes finding the threads about specific fisheries, areas difficult, and when they come up it's difficult to keep them at the top of the list where people see them (especially just before summer, when there is a lot of activity on the board).

What do you think about having a 'Shellfish Forum' so that threads about Crabbing, clamming, shrimping, etc would have their own home? I know there is a lot of collective knowledge on here about the topic, and I think members would appreciate it.

    finding, digging, cleaning Razor Clams.

    Pic #1
Shows you what to look for when on the beach. Its just a small dimple. Thats when you know there is a clam underneath.

    Pic #2
Shows you how to dig with a shovel. The tube is pretty self explanatory.
This pic was taken from here: http://www.sf.adfg.state.ak.us/regio...pubs/clams.pdf

When you've collected all your clams, soak them in water for several hours up to a day to get the sand out. Others can chime in here I dont really know how long.
I met a cook out in Massachusetts a few years back and told me to put a little bit of corn starch or flour in the water so that the clams will replace the sand in their shells with the flour or starch. Just a few spoon fulls should do.

When you're ready to take them out of their shells, start heating up some water. Keep it on medium high/high.

What you do next is QUICKLY soak a few clams at a time in the hot water. 5 to 10 seconds. You do not want to cook them. What the hot water does is softens them up and its easier to take them out of their shell. Many of the clams will still be alive at this point even after you've soaked them in the water.
Also, your water will always be cooling down from the constant soaking of cold clams.

Here's what to do when its out of its shell:

This is how I did it at least. There are people on this board that have done this 1000X more often than I have so they will have better advice but this worked for me.

I think it is a great idea.
It ain't about the # of pounds of meat we bring back, nor about how much we spent to go do it. Its about seeing what no one else sees.

HA! I guess I deserved that.

That second 'smiley' face pic is of me after trying to bite into my first clam.

"What? You dont eat the shell??"

Stewed Clam Shells are a delicacy in any good resturant.

Take 1 doz. shells and wash and rinse off all the sand.
Boil in 1/2 gallon of water, pinch of salt, 1/2 cup of Jack Daniels, a little dill.
                            Simmer for 1 hour.
                            Let cool to room temperature.
Add 2 cups of additional Jack Daniels.
Throw the shells away and drink the gravey.

Dave - That sounds like a true delicacy - I will have to try that recipe this summer.
