  • Arctic Char off the Sag

Has anyone fished any of the tributaries off the Saganavirktok in the fall? I am planning a trip up to the slope for caribou but really want to get into some of those char. I am most interested in timing more than specific places. Any info or stories would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Brian

I feel another Arctic Char/Dolly Varden debate coming.

I wish I knew. When I get home from Iraq, I plan on heading up to the Sag to fish for those hogs up there.

You must mean the Dolly Varden when you refer to catching Char in the Sag River tributaries or the main stem?

You might want to check this reference ADF&G interactive mapping for species distribution:

        http://www.sf.adfg.state.ak.us/SARR/...ps.interactive

click on "Start Mapping" see for yourself.

Also consult the Highway Angler...tells about timing for "Dolly Varden" (Char) in the Sag River and where public access points are at. The book fails to mention anything about "arctic char" being in the Sag River.

Should be fun for you, I will be up there myself in August.

How close do you get to the Ivishak River, when fishing the Sag?

I'm pretty sure its alittle over a mile walk from the road to the confluence of the two.
You know your not catching any fish when you start talking about the weather...

I cannot remember how far it is. I've actually boated the Sag into the Ivashak putting in right above pump station 2. It wasn't a very long boat ride, even going upstream as we did. I can't imagine that it is over a mile like bigcox said.

It's my understanding that the Sag (and Ivishak) are great streams for 'sight fishing'-?

I've never fished it. I was up there on a caribou hunt.

First hand expierience almost always trumps maps. Having never been up there myself, so I can't say exactly how far it is. But Google Earth has the distance to where the ivishak and sag river meet at "about" one mile from the road. Not sure if the ruler on google earth is accurate or not though. I'd have to go up there and check it out myself.

                      Fish On!

                        Lemme rephrase what I said...

I was agreeing with you, and that I don't remember it being over a mile. I wasn't disagreeing. I worded it wrong, sorry. I am just a dumb grunt.

yess....guess we'll just have to go up there and slay those monsters. I heard the skeeters are terrible up there, might need your military grade mosquito dope.

Well, I think that you guys are gonna be the ones slaying them. From what I heard from KISS freak, you guys are heading up there in August. I'm quite sure that I wont be back until the end of August/beginning of September.
