  • Got a few shrimp yesterday

I was out yesterday (monday) shrimping and thought i'd post some pictures of the fishing. It turned out to be a beautiful day, calm & sunny & i caught about 600 shrimp for the day with a total soak time of 7 hours. They are NOT westmarine pots, I build the pots myself.

landing the first pot of the string, hope they are all this good

the catch from 5 pots soaked for 2 hours, i don't soak them long.

Any difference between the ones you build and the ones I can buy at westmarine? I use the good mesh net round ones that stack well.

Excuse me, sir, but I will have to confiscate those shrimp. I'll be by this morning. Please have them packed on ice. Thank you.

        Griff,
There is a lot of difference, my pots are built of Aquamesh a high grade galvanized/vinyl coated wire that is used for lobster pots back east, they are fastened with heavy duty aluminum clips instead of tiny hog rigs (big clip = stronger pot) and most importantly the tunnels are completly different than those that wm has. I have compared the results of wm pots to mine with friends who fish them and it seems to average that mine fish about 2-3 times better and thats with a shorter soak time. I lobster fished commercialy for 25 years back east so i have a good idea of what i am doing when it comes to building pots. I presantly fish commercialy(gillnet) in PWS & Cordova.
        Ripface,
You need to get your own pots cause you'll have a hard time getting me to give up my shrimp!

What other sorts of critters do you see in your pots regularly? Also, how much do you charge for a standard pot?

                        Steve's pots do work good!

I bought a couple of pots from Steve last spring. Made 2 multi-day trips out of Whittier in July and August. I had no clue what I was doing, but in spite of that fact, I caught hundreds of shrimp each trip. Don't know why I didn't start shrimping 20 years ago.
Steve::: I will be contacting you one of these days to talk about purchasing a couple more pots. They are strong and easy to use. I see no comparison to others out there on the market. Thanks
Now I gotta come up with a pot puller!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pulling by hand was kind of fun at first, but it got old real quick at 400 to 500 feet deep.

                          Gary,
Glad to hear that the pots are fishing well for you. Give me a call when you are ready or just to BS about fishing out on the sound. Thanks for the endorsement.
                          Tom,
About the only other critters i've caught have been a few well fed octopus that ate all the shrimp in my pots. I pm'ed you with info on the pots.

Have you used the round mesh netting ones before? If so, found any advantage or disadvatage of yours? I used 5 west marine pots, but bought 5 of the round ones that stack very easily just for the sake of taking up less room. They are easier to get the shrimp out of too.
