  • Nautical Charts for dummies

In a nutshell I am trying to figure out how to measure miles on a nav. chart. If what I read is correct the vertical measurements on the side of the chart are minutes. Minutes= nautical miles. Could anyone please better inform me. Also does anyone know where to take classes on reading charts ect.

You are right about one min is one nm and 60 nm is one deg. of lat., They have classes in the winter in Anchorage.

I had trouble reading the darn thing to convert NM to M, so I bought this handy gadget. It looks like a pen with a wheel on it and it tell you in miles NC, ETC. I think I paid only $20. Great thing to have and accurate.

        Coulda saved you $20

        FYI

The conversion from NM to Statue Mile is 1.15

Thus, 1 NM = 1.15 Statue Miles (i.e. "regular" mile)
