When does the mosquito population "hit" Alaska in earnest? Are some parts of this beautiful state more prone than others?

My daughters watch for mosquitos in the spring as a sign winter is over, this year they saw them about the middle of May in Anchorage and they haven't gone away. Hit in earners? All summer. Everywhere there is water there are mosquitos so that means everywhere in Alaska during the summer. We usually don't get bit while out halibut fishing but any other time its repellent time. In some places the little black flies of varioius types are a worse problem and those little suckers hurt when they bite.
