It seems like salmon fishing trips in the rivers in Takeetna and Seward are quite pricey: $150/person for a 4 hr trip = $600 for a family of 4. Are there some less well known places that are more reasonable priced? Also, at the end of July which site is preferred: Talkeetna or Seward. I just have to make sure that my 11yr old son catches a salmon or 2! Thanks.

That's about right price. Now the end of July silvers will be in most river that you can drive and fish from shore. Ship creek in down town Anchorage, Bird Creek Girwood 45 minutes south of Anchorage, Motnana. Willow, Sheep and other creek up in the wasilla valley area.Living the Alaskan Dream

Considering the cost of equipment, fuel and insurance, it is expensive to guide people in the state.
That said, there are lots of fishing opportunities that do not require a guide. Those that are successful in Alaska are those who are flexible, and allow the reality of life in Alaska to shape their dreams, vs. trying to force their dreams on the reality of Alaska.
If you have a tenuous grasp of reality, Alaska is not for you.
