I have had too many reels fall victim to saltwater. What's the first thing you should do after your freshwater reel has been exposed to saltwater?
Hike faster. I hear banjo music.

The first thing you should do is rinse it with freshwater. Most QUALITY reels today really dont need more than that on an as used basis from what I have experienced, I would though give them a thorough cleaning at the end of the season so they are ready for next year.

I am no expert and we have others on the board with much more experience.

      Prevention.

Will, don't use your freshwater reels in saltwater. Saltwater penetrates softer metals used in freshwater reels so unless you're trying to justify a new reel to your significant other, don't do it. I''ve even had springs and fasteners in saltwater reels break / turn to mush.
