So while I have been Icefishing and working on a few fishing jigs lately I received a suprise phone call.
The call was from my friend Ron Hurley from In2Fishin guide service in Homer inviting me on a friends only winter king fishing trip.
Well needless to say I was excited waiting for the day to arrive. I have not done much winter king fishing and have always wanted to learn from someone who knows what he is doing.
Well yesterday was the day.
We left the dock promptly at 9:00 am.
Got out towards Seldovia and dropped the first line in. Second line went in as we started trolling and by the time the third line was being setup the first one went off and I pulled in the first king a small but good eating sized fish.
That's how it went to start and we landed 5 kings in the first 40 minutes.
The rest of the day was a bit slower and the big fish never really materialized but all in all a great day.
We landed 14 kings keeping 7 of them as well as a keeper Halibut.
We also caught and released a couple of small ling cod and small halibut as well as a small black rockfish.
The biggest fish was ~10#.
I learned a lot and had a great time. Ron's boat is real nice also. He runs a 32' Bayweld with an Espar cabin heater.
The weather was calm and we even saw a few sunny skies in the afternoon.
If you have been considering a winter king trip in Homer now's a great time.
