  • Does egg roe work on chromer Kings?

I know salmon roe is deadly effective on spawning Kings located in streams and brackish water around the mouths of streams. Does anyone know if roe works on bright chromer Kings freshly arrived from the ocean? Or is it better to stick with herring and other bait feed-like artificial lures for the brighter fish?

They suck it up like candy when they run across it- saltwater and fresh. A bud is kind of a specialist at bobber fishing bays around river mouths. He uses bobber stops and herring on long casts when the fish are laying off, but switches to roe when they move up on the shallow flats. His words exactly: "Who needs a boat?"
"Lay in the weeds and wait, and when you get your chance to say something, say something good."

I love going to ketchikan each year and at the cleaning station I take all the eggs that everyone is throwing out and add cure to them so that I can take them back to Oregon with me. Last year I brought back 75lbs and finished curing them and packing them for the year. I have only been out twice this year but have landed 2 fish on the eggs from last year. These fish were about 2 miles up a creek from salt water in 3 ft of water. I love bobber fishing with eggs.

75lbs of eggs? You must do a lot of fishing! There's no way I could go through that many eggs in a year, He'll I don't even eat that much salmon in a year

As the others mentioned; King Salmon love eggs whether they are chromers or blush. Even the dark ones will go for them. Some of the hand trollers here fish in front of the hatcheries casting with eggs and they clean house.
