  • Garmin 840xs

Anyone have one of these and can share some info?
In comparison I'm also looking at a Lowrance elite 7 with chirp.
It appears the 840xs is not available in a touch screen, I had a 740S on another boat and liked it except for the fact the sounder capabilites sucked even after going to a P66 transducer.
    Thanks

I just picked up the 1040xs, big brother to the 840. At first glance it seems like a great machine, but the platform is very similar to what garmin runs in all their units, so don't expect a whole new feel. The true test will be when we get the ducer in and see what it's like. You'll also need to pay attention to which chirp ducer you get, as all are not equal. We went with the B175M.

Although I haven't been able to use it extensively, I am not a big fan of the Lowrance units. Their platform just isn't as user friendly in my experience, and having owned both I much prefer the garmin.

PM me and I'll give you more intel after I'm able to test the unit.

I just recently installed the 840xs. Haven't had the opportunity to see how well it works yet. I went with the 77/200 kHz HD-ID Down Vu with Chirp transducer. The cable for the transducer wasn't even close to long enough for my 26'er. Garmin support was very accommodating though in getting an extension shipped out to me.

Lookin forward of hearing how you like it.
Passed up an offer to trade my new 6 hp 4 stroke for a 70dv. Not worth enough money and seems a somewhat lacking unit compared to the 840 (or even the discontinued 740s)

I also bought the 840xs but haven't tried it on the water yet. Same problem with cable length on the transom mount transducer...only ship with 20' of cable, really Garmin? I couldn't find the extension cable here in town (they make a 10' and a 20') but I ordered it online and hope it gets here soon. I really wanted to try the CHIRP transducer but didn't get it yet. I'm hoping that Airmar comes out with a more powerful transom mount CHIRP transducer next year. According to the Garmin guy at the sportsmans show I'd only be able to reliably track the bottom with the transom CHIRP ducer at 650ft (through hulls do better but I'm not doing one of those). Also the CHIRP transducer is pretty much CHIRP all the time from what I understand so it wasn't like I could switch modes into a traditional mode if I was trying to see the bottom at deeper than 650ft. I'm not usually looking much deeper that 500' and that might be enough for some of you but I don't like it when my transducer loses the bottom so I decided to wait. My thinking is that there will be a lot of cool write-ups on just how good CHIRP is (or isn't) after this summer and hopefully a more powerful transom mt. transducer will come out soon also.

Also Garmin has a rebate deal going through July 7th I think where you get the expanded Bluecharts for essentially $100.

Oh....one more thing for the OP.... A little smaller screen, but the 740xs is definitely the touchscreen counterpart to the 840xs

AKJOB- I had the model number wrong on the touchscreen, its actually the 741xs.

Also, AK6Pack- I don't think the 77/200 kHz HD-ID Down Vu transducer has built in CHRIP.....at least that's what I was told. DownVu is something different than CHIRP.

I installed two 741xs's on my boat, one at the forward helm and one at the aft. I have to say I'm delighted with their performance.

That was my understanding also when I was looking at it. Had one shop tell me one thing and another a different. Garmin somewhat beat around the bush saying the frequency was 77/200 kHz. When I asked if it was a CHIRP ducer the lady said, "Yes it is the 77/200 kHz." I guess I will see how it works here in the next couple of weeks.

                    Big Jim,
Take a look at my thread from a few weeks ago.

                    http://forums.outdoorsdirectory.com/...-or-the-1040XS

i have a decent Furuno setup for my ocean boat but needed something better on my river boat, but then also wanted to be able to use something new on my ocean setup. After buying the 740 (although discontinued now) I felt I was buying something tried and true. But after speaking to Sweepint and others on the forum, I did follow up with Gill as recommended. The 840 and 1040 are basically the same unit but with the following exceptions, the 1040 has a 2" larger screen and also has a number pad. I went with a 1kw B175m transducer for my ocean boat and the P 66 transducer for my river boat. Also got the down/side view transducer for the ocean boat and the g2 vision chip. Spent a little more than I planned on from my original purchase with the 740 but I feel I'm moving into the 21st century finally.

Don't think you'll go wrong with either the 840 or the 1040, but if you got the room, I'd go with the larger. I'm told size "does" matter.... I'll be in Seward this weekend cutting a 3 3/4" hole in my hull this weekend and installing everything. Hope to have time to take pictures throughout the process to possible post here as there isn't much info on the web about these units nor the installation of all these products.

PM me if you have any questions. But I would also give Gill a shout. He saved me a few hundred dollars with my purchase and he has a wealth of knowledge and loves his job. Call him though and don't wait for an email response. He supplies all over the world.

                    good luck

PS - I'm also told with these new units are so good, once the fish feel the CHIRP ping, the just give up and float to the surface and jump into your fish box... roud: roud:

Well after a few weeks, we've drilled a 3.75" hole into my boat and have installed the Garmin 1040xs with SideVu / DownVu. Here is the link of my test run.
