I heard a guy talking about state progress in getting a king salmon hatchery on or near the Big Su going. And that the drop in numbers over the last few years started when the hatchery was closed for repairs. I've only been back in state since '06 and don't know the history here. Anyone got some insight? If they are going to do this, it would be great for sport fishing IMOO. But I would like to hear some other opinions, insights, and/or projections on this.

Were they talking about opening another hatchery or restarting one of the local ones that were closed in the 90s? Or just rebuilding the hatchery run in Willow Creek? The hatchery run had been dramatically reduced since 2003 and is projected to be returned to full stocking by 2012 once the new Anchorage sportfish hatchery is running fully.

First of all it wouldn't be the Big Su.... they would have to pick a trib to collect the brood and plant the smolts.

With possibly the exception of Alexander Creek, there's nothing wrong with natural production in the basin. It's naturally producing plenty of pre-harvest adults/subadults.

It's much more likely that something is horribly wrong with harvest management.

That's where the money needs to be spent.
Is there a reason you are not advising the state how to help manage their fisheries in some sort of capacity?

This isnt an insult it just seems that you know an extreme amount about the species of fish here and could be of some serious assistance to a program that has some obvious mismanagement's.
