Happy birthday, man.

I like the Winston BII-x 11' 7wt, for a few reasons. It is a great rod for both skagit and scandi lines and spey family casts, it two-hand overheads shooting heads great, and you can cast it all day as a singlehander without your arm falling off.

Another good one is the Sage Z-axis. All the above reasons, plus a little added beef and a wider grain window for spey family lines.

Redington makes a good 7wt switch in the CPX series, and it won't break the bank. It is a little heavier, but the action is good for both one and two hands.

I personally own the Sage Z-axis switch 7 and the Redington CPX switch 6 wts, and have fished with the Winston BII-x before... and would vouch for either of them.

Remarks by your buddy, Matt strike home for me. Like other endeavors, "perfection" is more an internal ideal - easily met even on days of small or few fish. Not too small though - heh.

Echo and Beulah both make good switch twigs in the 7wt class, but the actions are much more "spey-like" - softer, with a deeper flex. If a fella was just throwing spey family lines with his switchrod, these are great rods, and at an affordable price-point as well.
