  • Kenai River this sunday

So Sam, Jose (lv2fish87) and I are going to float this weekend. Our only question is Sportsmans to jims or the mid river. We have tons of experience on the upper but only a few times on the mid. We have a kicker for the boat too so if you were in our shoes which would you do?????

Hey I fixed it right after the post. You stalking me?????????

We are giving one section or the other a shot. Low water and the river will close 1 may. Gotta get in at least 3 more floats before it closes. We should hook a couple but this can be a slow time. Either way a day on the water, pics, video and fishing. Life is good

Apparently I don't read any better than you type. I missed the typo myself.

I want to see some pictures when you get back man. Have fun

If you go middle, I think you will have a tough time motoring up from Bings since the water is very low. If you go from Skilak, you will have to drag your boat across the ice of the lake. Also the area below Skilak is closed to motors for several miles because of swans.

thanks Fish. I thought that would be the problem with ice on the lake and low water. I think we will just hit sportsmans to jims and enjoy easter on the water.

                Not good

Floated sportsmans to Jim 1st. Launched off a 4 foot ice shelf. Water is very very low and we did do some walking. Jims was easy to get the boat out but still had a big Ice shelf. Water was very clear but we saw nothing.

Pulled out and went to the bridge. We saw some Mcnasty silvers in there. A couple of bows and dollies tailing behind them but we could not get them to hit.

All in all a good day thouogh. Nice weather, nice drive and it is the first time I have been shutout on the Kenai in a long time

Pretty much threw every thing we had. ESL's Flesh, Beads, sculpins, wooly buggers etc etc. I was not surprised we did not see much from sportsmans down. I was a bit surprised we did not pick anything up around the bridge. There were 3 or 4 other guys fishing from shore there also with no luck. Well 1 guy got a silver. The way I see it. We the 3 of us diehards getting skunked it was a pretty slow day for all that day. Sam and Jose are very good fisherman on the river too. Oh well it happens to the best of us. I knew those great trips in december and february freezing out buts off and catching all those fish were good. Unless the water comes up before the river closes on 1 may Im gonna stay away from the upper. We are looking at doing the Mid river before it closes if the water comes up

Thanks for the update, I was considering the trip myself. I'm hoping to go just before the season closes as well. We'll see if the stars and moons align.

                        mid kenai

                        Chuck
you said you want to do the middle part before it closes may 1.
some one was telling me that it doesn't close the same as the upper.
Is this true? I know I need to read the regs, but don't have a new copy handy. Andrew

it closes for rainbows just like the upper. technically, you can fish for dollies all you want, but ethically it's suspect by most standards.

fishing isn't about life or death... it's more important than that.

I thought they changed that last year... I think Kenai upstream of the killey is closed to all fishing May2-June 10
I choose to fly fish, not because its easy, but because its hard.
