  • Salmon Point Trail Collapse

Be advised that the trail to Salmon Point has collapsed just before you reach the final overlook. The area has slid all the way to the river 100' below and has left a 20' gap in the trail.

The only way passed it is to climb vertically on the unstable, fissured soils and squeeze through trees immediately above the area that has collapsed.

I crossed the area going to the point and crossed it going back to the trailhead, but I will not do it again.

Although I've dipped in the canyon for years, I don't know what folks call "salmon point". Can you elaborate on where that is....beyond the tunnel or ?

Salmon Point is just downstream of where the Chitina and Copper Rivers meet. The trailhead is just past the rock cut between Chitina and the McCarthy Bridge.

Is this the same slide that affected the road itself, not long ago; or a second slide in the same area?

It is a different slide at the other end of the trail just before you get to the point itself. Also, the old cabin is collapsed across the trail. I don't know if that is news since I didn't walk out there last year.

Did they get the road patched back together through there?

I walked the salmon Point trail last September.... the cabin was collapsed then... I heard an interesting story about the Scandinavian guy who lived there ... he married a local native lady.. when she passed away... he made her relatives upset... he gave her a Viking burial,... he put her body in a wooden boat.... set it on fire.... and pushed it down the copper
