  • Upper Kenai this weekend

I'm looking to try out my new cataraft this weekend for an initial check, and was thinking of floating from Cooper Landing to Sportsmens or Jim's if I have the time. How is the river this time of year?

open, but quite low, one might even drag ass a little in a cat.

      Low but boatable

I ran from the bridge to Jim's from Wed to Thur. River was low, but I've seen it lower (in winter). Skinniest reaches are a couple of bars just upstream from the Russian. I was in an 18 foot cat with just me and light camping gear, so that is not necessarily a fair test, but I didn't hit anything.

Alaska Rafting Company was doing a scenic trip from Sportsman's through the canyon with 10 to a boat on Thur and also did fine as far as Jim's (when I got out). They could tell you about conditions below Jim's if you wanted to run the canyon.

Any new reports? I would like to float it Monday in a 14' round raft from the lake to Jims. Any info is much appreciated.
        Thanks,
        Mike
Got a few of it down

For those that don't have this flow rate bookmarked here it is again. http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ak/nwis/current/?type=flow
from here you can keep an eye on where its at. Running at 7.99 ft @ 2780 flow. Wish I had the time this weekend to do it as I don't see why it would be any problem. This sun will only make it flow more with all the melt off.

Planning to go on the 2d for grins. Is WILDMON still open for shuttles?

Did the float yesterday. 14' round boat we never dragged or came close. My daughter loved Princess rapids. It was beautiful, and strange to go by the Russian/Ferry area and see it so empty. Used the Wildmans Shuttle, super convenient, pulled off the road and it took 5-10 minutes to get setup pay and leave to launch. I can see how Jims could be a problem once its busy after the 11th. Not a real clear cut looking launch/landing area.
