  • ADN Homer business fire destroys commercial fishing boats

Sure hope it was non of "our" guys boats.

Several commercial fishing boats were destroyed in a fire at a Homer boatyard Friday morning, according to city officials.

The Homer Police Department said the fire started at about 6 a.m. in a large workshop at the Northern Enterprises Boat Yard. The shop is used for repairing and painting fishing boats.

Four boats in the workshop Friday morning were ruined in the fire, according to the company, which said it rents out the workshop for people who need to fix their boats.

Homer Police Chief Mark Robl said the fire was still burning shortly after 11 a.m. but had been brought under control. No one was hurt, he said.

The boatyard is on Kachemak Drive, northeast of the Homer Spit. According to the Northern Enterprises website, the boatyard comprises 30 acres and 20 buildings. The company offers year-round boat storage, haulout service and commercial leasing

Not good! Thanks for the heads up. I wished I wouldn't have read the comments from the ADN readers. One knucklehead is already saying the commercial fishermen are burning their boats because our fish are rumored radio active...Grrrr! If someones looking for someone to gut shoot this afternoon, I have a candidate for you

<edit> I hope it wasn't Freddys Boat works....I wish one of our Homeroid members would run down and check it out and give us a report

Holy Crap it was Freddy! Pacific Fishing magazine had an article about him a couple years ago cause he had a nervous breakdown because he agreed to build 14 new gillnetters (or something like that) in one winter apparently he accomplished the task but he was last seen down at the cannery eating gillnets chanting in tongues something about effing comfishers... (kidding) but he was pretty whacked
I wonder how it started? Kind of sounds like one of the boys put a little to much catalyst in the ol' gelcoat. The boat building business is not a healthy business I tell ya. I just hope the guys bought construction insurance on their new boats......

Let's hope all had insurance and the leasing space company had some too. You can't pay for "too much" insurance!! With all the new products being sold on the market, no telling what was the cause. Thoughts and prayers are going out to the families involved. Hope you guys rebound.

I can see the logic in burning a boat if you're at the bottom of the barrel and you're a worm. I can't believe it would be in ones best interest to burn 4 boats in the middle of construction, prior to the kick off of what is forecasted to be a pretty lucrative season.....It just doesn't pencil out

Is what's going on in Japan going to affect fish prices?

i'm assuming prices should be through the roof. I'm pretty sure the tsunami and quake worked over their warehouses and cold storages.
I don't think people are stupid enough to think only fish got radiated. If a fish got radiated, so did a bird and so did a cow and so did a crop and so on. We will see.
