  • winterizing 4 storkes

    I have heard that on 4 strokes you don't have to winterize them. Dose any one else not winterize(sp) there 4 stokes?

    What I do

    What I do is this:

    There is a foaming oil at most auto stores.

    1. Drain carbs and then foam the carbs through the drain holes. Reinsert drains obviously.

    2. Pull each plug and foam the inside of the cylinders. Apply oil to plug threads for winter. Crank over one or two turns.

    3. Pull batteries and take inside.

    4. Use a spray oil on all electrical connections or bare metal.

    5. Change lower unit oil or drain. (The oil should be good but any water might cause the case to break)

    6. Put fuel stabilizer in the gas tank.

    7. Pick up all of my replacement parts in the winter. Plugs, zincs, hoses......

    8. Pray for an early spring so I can go boating again. Usuall in the water beging of April.

      Dewey's just told me to get a one gallon gas can and mix gasoline,this oil type and sta bil. Disconect the gas hose and stick it to the enigine. Run the engine for about a minute and then it's good. to go. Then just pour some sta bill into the gas tank. I'm assuming there is more then one way to winterize your boat

        Probably lots of ways. But my Honda will start on the first or second try and keep running. I have been absolutely impressed with 4-strokes. Not one outboard motor repair place here in Valdez except one store with some parts. Go figure......

          Non-Oxy Fuel

          I had to spend a few hundred this spring on my 60HP 2 stroke as it had a build up of "yellow sludge" in the carbs and jets. The quality of oxygenated fuel in 87 octane is very poor. The amount of ethanol % is not consistent.You don't notice it in your vehicles because they get driven with a greater frequency.
          After talking with the marine mechanics they advise all engine owners to buy the 91 octane non-oxygenated fuel, yes it costs more but it is cheaper in the long run. They advise running your engine dry if you aren't going to use it in more than 2 weeks. They advise to drain the fuel tank of all gas or as much as is practible. They also said that Stabil or its counterpart will NOT stabilize gas with enthanol fpr winterizing. I don't know if you folks have that in your gas up there or not.
          Yes you can fog carbs, drain lower, etc. but the main culprit is the ethanol from corn. If you think this is bad wait until E85 comes out!!!

            Storkes?

            I tried to winterize my four storks, but they were resitant to the foaming. They flew south anyway.

            Just kidding! Couldn't resist:-)
