    Old Town canoes

Old Town sells a keel-protecting kit for their canoes. The idea is to install the protective membrane over the keel before damaging it.

      Old town kevlar tape

here is the Old town keel protection Ray is talking about
      https://crab.secure-host.com/extrasp...idPlateKit.doc

Most all your boats made from different materials can have a Kevlar skid plated installed. Like Ray said, I also recomend that you do it before you put it in the water for the first time.
I wish the manufactures of canoes would offer it as an option from the factory, I think for those of us that really get heavy use from our canoes that sooner or later you are going to need to repair this area of your canoe.

          canoe repairs

          http://www.voyageur-gear.com/2002_pr...age=3&filter=B

the Voyageur company is a a sister company of Mad River Canoes, they have many different keel protectors for different boat materials.
Kevlar, Roylex, etc. the prices are about the same no matter where you try to buy the keel protectors. Kevlar kits are usually no more than $75.00 and sometimes less. you may want to check out REI in Anchorage and see if they have one on the shelf, this will save you shipping.
