  • Kroto to Deshka Landing

Anyone canoe from Kroto Creek at Petersville to Deshka Landing? Any intel is appreciated. I have a tandem Old Town, no motor.

That would involve paddling up river in the Big Su for a few miles...sounds like alot of work.

Any way to arrange a pick up at the mouth of the Deshka via internal combustion?

I think you'd have an awesome trip down the Kroto, into the deshka, but unless you got a skookum outboard mounted on your canoe, you better have alt plan to get up the Su to the Deshka ldg...

I have been told you can get a pickup from the boat lunch or flag a boat down an get a tow [a few dollars] other people have did it

Years ago I talked to Ron (Ron's Riverboat) about doing this. At that time he rented Coleman canoes and would put you in off the road and pick you up on the Deshka. I don't remember if he put in on Moose or Kroto Cr. The bottoms of his canoes were pretty worn...he said from folks not taking their stuff out of them before dragging them across the gravel bars...hint. I don't know if he dropped folks off at Deshka Landing or (I think more likely) took them back to Susitna Landing. I've looked at both creeks off the road and some times there's not much water. I've never gone down either but hope to soon.

Ron no longer does the boat/guide thing. You might check with the new operator of Susitna Landing.

Let us know how it goes.

Here's an idea. If your time allows: there's going to be a river boat gathering at Susitna Landing at the end of the month, see the sticky under Power Boats. You MIGHT be able to get some one from that gathering to pick you up on the Deshka and get you to some place else if you covered their expenses. I've been awake all night trying to figure out how to make it work for me but I just don't have the vacation schedule flexability.

Karen Jettmar has a write up on the float in her book, THE ALASKA RIVER GUIDE.

Ray Roth just outside of Deshka Landing will pick you up at the mouth for a very reasonable cost and drop you off at the landing after your float. He's a great guy!
Rusts flying service drops people off at Neil Lake all summer and they float down to the mouth, takes a few days. It's a very popular float, especially for the folks from foreign countries. Not sure who they use to ferry the clients from the mouth back to the landing though.
Word of caution, a lot of airboaters running the river, use some common sense and you'll be fine.

Airboaters running the river? :nyanya: A lot of boats run the river. And us NON-airboaters (because mine is broke) need the deeper waters to run in. So if you float the river and you hear a boat coming just try to protect yourself. Because we won't know you are there until we are on top of you. A lot of people do that trip. I have family members that do it every year but we have boat to do the trip from the mouth of Deshka to the landing. Like BK said, check with the Roth's (coffee shop and cabins jsut befoe Landing gate) to see if they can arrange something. If nothing else contact Roger or Jason at the landing and they can hook you up with someone.
