Default Still Raining

Like crazy actually. I was able to sneak out this AM for a little hunting though. Saw 4 bucks and whacked this one at the bottom of a clearcut. My excitement trumped common sense and it was a BEAR getting it back up to the landing. Threw it over my shoulder and went full retard and powered up the hill. Within 15 seconds a second buck came out and joined this guys doe (she must have been hot) but I wasn't about to shoot another one.

Nice Mike. My son hopped the ferry this afternoon and hopefully he'll have a few down this weekend.

If I can get my new outboard mounted tomorrow morning quickly I'll head out for a little hunt also. That buck looks like he so wanted to be a 4x4 but just couldn't find the good greens in August. Congrats that sounded like a fun hunt.

Well first day down out of seven and no deer down. Only saw five does. But I got two grouse so it wasn't a total loss I guess.

Default Cancelled Week

Had my first cancellation of the year today. If anyone can make it down this week, $125 per day meals, lodging, and rig. Deer are rocking...

Hey Mike I am staying in Craig and was wondering if you wouldn't mind giving me a place to go to find some deer. We got one today in Staney creek but only saw four deer all day. Thanks for the info if you want to give it up. If not I don't blame you.

Default Deer

Between myself and the clients we saw 11 bucks today. here is a tip for you that seems black and white - leave the roads. Walk waterbars, skegs, and old-growth. You'll see more deer and feel better about the hunt. Staney is a favorite for all, there's deer there!

I agree with Mike. After just leaving the Island and hunting hard for 6 days, the best thing you can do is get out of the vehicle and look for them. There are deer every where, i really mean that. We killed 6 deer and none in the same area. Just look for deer sign near clear cuts, muskegs, etc. Make some calls, if nothing shows itself in about 20 minutes move on.

I'm sure there are more hunters there now that it is full rut season and that means the roads will have more pressure. I was absolutley blown away by the number of old logging roads that take you into some beautiful deer country. Just take one of the roads and hunt it from out of the truck.

If you are not trophy hunting there is no reason why you can't fill your tags on that Island.

Good luck and shot straight.

And look out for Mike's peanut butter cookies, I mean hockey pucks, HAHAHA.

Bryan I just don't know what to say I can not for the life of me get a deer to come to the call. I don't know what the heck I am doing wrong. It seems like the only deer I see are on the highway. I have been about every place but down to Polk Inlet and Soda Bay.

Hike.. Hike.. and Hike some more.. I average 5 miles a day on the gps, and it ain't road walking.. The further away from the roads you get, the more exciting calling deer will be.

I'm no expert in deer hunting, having only hunted blacktails 3 times - but if I were unsure of my calling skills, I just wouldn't call. I found good success still hunting, so instead of potentially scaring them away with poor sounding calls, I'd just keep the call in my pocket and my movements quiet.

Probably not doing anything wrong. Deer gods just aren't smiling upon you. Its ok. Woooosssaaah. Rub your ear lobe. Ok.

Try something different. If you've been hunting low, go high. Try not calling. Try calling longer, shorter, louder, more quietly change the pitch. Try a grunt. If you've been hunting the 'skegs, try the timber, if you've been in the timber try the skegs. Go north, Go south.

The deer ARE there. I 100% guarantee it.

The number one thing you can do to help yourself right now is this: Tonight bust out the topo. Find yourself a nice high up bench with a big flat spot on the topo..Theres your muskeg. Pack a lunch and some booolits. Wake up early, find the spur that will get you the closest to your muskeg. Get out. Bust through the ****hole of brush and devils club and nastiness until you reach your little slice of heaven. Sit down call a bit. 30 min tops. Then move on. Cover the whole muskeg including any big timber surrounding it.

If not successful. Repeat tommorrow night and the next day.

Default Starting out too

What type of call are you all using? A doe bleat, grunt, high pitched whine? I hear about all sorts of folks calling them in, and I just don't have any luck calling them in, so I am not sure if my calling just isn't quite right or what. thanks for your help.
