    Default Watch out for 'Tunnel Maintenance'

    I went down to take care of a few things on the boat in Whittier before the weekend. I checked the tunnel schedule and it said it was open until 11pm back to Anchorage. I was done by 10pm, and got to the tunnel at 10:10 and it was closed. I figured that they must have closed it early because there was no traffic, so I came back at 10:50 for the 11pm tunnel, but do dice. I went back to the boat and slept until the 6am tunnel (man it can blow nonstop in Whittier).

    On my way out I stopped at the booth, and asked what time they closed, and if they are on summer hours, and he said they were and the last tunnel was at 11pm. When I told him I was there at both 10 and 11pm last night, he said, 'oh yea, we closed early last night for maintenance, didn't they tell you about that on the way in?' They did not happen to mention that to me. Upon hearing this he said 'oops, sorry about that'.

    Something new to watch out for.

    Actually, if my wife was along she would have thought of that and gotten it. I just take my knocks and move on.

    When I go through that tunnel into the "black hole" of Whittier I never plan on returning to home again, if I do it's considered a bonus life.

    You took it well. I would have been hopping mad, especially if I'd missed work or a work trip.

    Just a thought;

    I like consistency in rules, from traffic tickets, game refs, schedules, whatever. If the rules of something are "sort-of" enforced or "sometimes applied" consistently, than one can plan for it to be flaky. If they are always enforced without a doubt, than one can plan for that. Those tunnel guys should be hung for that, those ***** don't get to knock off or make a decision based on what they see twenty feet in front of them, it's a state or federal road! Those tunnel guys push some other rules that make no sense most of the time anyway (like the gas can...) so for them to decide to shut access down an hour early is grounds for some ones **** to be BBQed!

    Confirmation that the same management is running operations on both sides of the tunnel. Not a suprise

    I think that should read same mis-management.
    Those that are successful in Alaska are those who are flexible, and allow the reality of life in Alaska to shape their dreams, vs. trying to force their dreams on the reality of Alaska.

    If you have a tenuous grasp of reality, Alaska is not for you.

    Last weekend before I went through the tunnel on my way to Whittier, they measured the width of my boat beforehand. It's only a 24-ft boat. Maybe they were just practicing. One good thing was that as I was waiting for the tunnel to open the Whittier Coast Guard Auxilliary gave my boat a courtesy exam and I got my 2011 sticker. Save me from having to drag the boat from my house to Fred Meyer in Eagle river.

    I've been thinking, usually when there is a prison and a tunnel is dug, people escape. Whatdya call those who have a tunnel but refuse to escape?

    Ha, same here! The Admiral would have not only gotten her money back, the tunnel person would have probably given her a free summer pass!
