Default More fun at the SCI Show

Congrats on that great looking wolverine!

I also had a good time at the SCI Alaska Taxidermy Competition. There were some really nice animals on display.

I entered a moose cow shoulder mount, and two wolf pedestal mounts. They all earned first place scores, and the closed mouth wolf pedestal won Judge's Choice Best in Show.

    Default European technique

Also wanted to share a technique used on European mounts that I like. It makes the skull stand up a little rather than flat on the wall without using the wooden blocks, which I dont like as much. You all may have seen it before, but a couple taxidermists I asked had not seen it done this way before. You dont see it unless you get along the wall and look so it doesnt take away from the viewing pleasure

Um, You meen Carion Beetles or Demestid Beetles ??

I have a good freind that is also a taxidermist that had beetle for 4 years , till they infested his studio & caused major grief.

If properly boiled fresh you will get the same quality as the beetles can do.

I had my buddy cleaning all of mine till his mess then I went back to boiling.

    Default Bison euro

Here's a couple shots of what I ended up doing with my Kodiak bison skull. Some of you may remember I asked for ideas on what to do with the hide (which got tanned at Moyles and I kept). I had the skull done at Kodiak Bones & Bugs. He cleans with beetles and delivers a finished product. All I did was skin & trim meat off the skull, and pop off the horns. I like using cross-sections of burls for my euro mounts, and in this case I stacked two so the skull would tilt back a little (my brother's good idea). Because of the skull weight, I attached using two methods. I ran two lag bolts through the wood and into the skull, plus, I used one wing anchor into the brain cavitiy. Probably overdone, but I don't want it falling on anyone.

I like the worn character of the horns. He wore off the outer two layers from using his horns so much. They probably would have been another 2" longer if the outer layers were still there.

    Default Mt Goat shoulder

Here's a Billy from the Hoonah area that I finished yesterday. I prefer to put more "movement" in the pose, but the client wanted a straight mount.

    Default European Mounts

Here is a few pics of my Euro sheep heads. I used Skull Hookers to hang them. While I like the sheep heads themselves I'm not real sure of the presentation or location, can't put my finger on it but I don't like it. It could be that they don't sit up high enough or whatever. Also the Skull Hooker base is upside down something I didn't realize in my haste to get them hung when the Skull Hookers arrived.

Sent this B&C black bear skull home yesterday. Nice old boar with broken upper canine on a walnut pedestal.
