Question Best places to kayak in Fairbanks or close....

Moving up there hopefully soon and love to kayak. Where are the good places to kayak close to Fairbanks that are not crazy rapids or such? The Mrs. and I like to explore backwaters, rivers and inland lakes. You can private message me if you want to keep it secret off the forum. Thanks!

You might want to post on the freshwater forum. I don't fish up there but just from watching these boards I have heard there is some great waters; both rivers and lakes.

The upper Chena river and the Chatanika would be good places to start. Other Rivers would require you to paddle back up stream or arrange a pick up by river boat or plane.

I will second the upper Chena, with one warning about the birch tree sweepers. Some of the corners are really tight and with nearly all the flowing water going through a stainer you have to do some back paddling to get around them. Fun fun fun.

For flat water you can't beat touring the Tangle Lakes down off the Denali highway.

The upper Chena in awesome, but it can eat your lunch so be careful. Drop me a PM when you get here and I would be happy to show you around and some put in and take out options.

One of the strainers mentioned already.
