    Default Coast Guard rating laws

    Is it illegal in Alaska to use a motor on a boat that is bigger than the Coast guard recomendation? I've seen dealers set boats up and sell them like this. If in fact it is illegal, has anyone ever been ticketed? What was the fine?

    I doubt its illegal (now it may be unlawful for a dealer to do this and sell the boat retail). My boat a, 22' Boulton Sea Skiff, didn't even come with a ratings placard, and I purchased it new. I believe only boats 20' and under require a ratings placard. So in that case who's to say you can't take the placard off or let it fall off. And if you are not required to maintain the placard (like a mattress tag, where only the retail purchaser can remove the tag) whats to stop you from buying an older boat without a placard and putting any motor you want on it. Don't quote me, hopefully someone with more experience and expertise will post and we will all be the wiser.

    NMMA Certification


    NMMA Certification is a program designed to help boat manufacturers comply with industry safety and construction standards and federal regulations. In order to be NMMA Certified, boat manufacturers must certify each boat model they produce.

    How to find an NMMA Certified boat or yacht
    Ask your dealer
    Visit NMMA Boat Shows, Most show directories indicate who is NMMA Certified.
    Look for the NMMA Certified logo on the capacity plate of boats up to 26' or on the yacht plate of yachts 26' and larger. Plates are usually located near the helm.

    Why is an NMMA Certified boat better?
    All boats sold in the U.S. must meet U.S. Coast Guard minimum regulations. NMMA Certified boats must also meet the more comprehensive standards set by the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC).

    ABYC standards cover more systems and components than USCG regulations.

    How does a boat become Certified?
    Manufacturers build a boat to ABYC and USCG standards under the guidance of the company's NMMA-trained Certification specialist.

    NMMA inspects the completed boat to make sure it meets the established standards. If any oversights are found, the manufacturer must bring the boat to compliance by completing and documenting the necessary changes.

    Boats that successfully pass this inspection process are considered NMMA Certified.

    I know in wrangel they have some pritty fast boats. I therd the coatguard use too try to give them tickets but they coulden't catch them they were to fast and they would just run up the stikeen. and they wouldnt follow then up.LOL they would strip down a 16-17 ft boat and put a 225 with a 19 or 12 pitch prop and a jack plate. if you did'n do 70 mph plus you wern't ****.I rode in one and it was scary but fun..

    I had a 115 Johnson with a jet on my last 18' river boat. It was CG rated to something like 130hp. I took the 115 off and slapped on a 150hp VMAX Yamaha jet. What a difference in all aspects. While moose hunting, a trooper stopped by and chatted. We talked about boats and whatnot and he noticed my new motor. All he said was, "man, I bet that thing rips." It did... And that was it. So for legalities, he either didn't know or it was legal. Not sure. I originally bought the boat new as a package and went to another dealer for the engine and installation. They didn't say anything either. So,..........??????

    I suspect your insurance agent wouldn't approve and suspect that it would void any coverage if you ended up needing it. Just something else to think about.

    A 150 hp ob with jet would calculate out to about a 105 prop equilivant.

    I understand that, just like the 115 was 80 hp w/ jet. But had I put a prop on the 150, would it have been illegal for that boats ratings?? Could I have been ticketed? Is it based off of powerhead ratings? I would think so, not 100% positive.
    From what I've heard, dealers aren't supposed to sell a boat/motor setup that exceeds that particular boats CG ratings for hp. Is it just a safety recommendation placard or hard law? After you buy it and swap the motor out for something bigger, is it illegal? Maybe it's just not enforced too. I'm not sure.
