    Default So...

... does this look like an M1 to you, and do you think he took the two bears with it?
Photo was taken somewhere in southeast.

Looks like a carbine to me. I know guys who have taken deer with an M1 carbine, so I would think bears would be possible with perfectshot placement. It darn sure wouldn't be my first choice but I guess it could be done.

    So.....Why not?

They are Great Fur guns, with FMJ's they drill nice holes. 15 shots to get it done, ~~LOL!!~~
Black Bears would be about top end with that cartridge but use a Military one , for sake of reliability.

My friend in Kotzebue has one cahmber'd in .45automag.......Id definitly give taht one try

Looks like he might be GI and the bears were probably shot at a local garbage dump with his issued M1 Carbine. Nothing out of the ordinary for the times.

Yes, that looks like an M1 30 carbine and the man holding it looks like active duty military. It would be interesting to hear the rest of the story surround that picture. I guess if an M1 is all you have then using the M1 makes some sense.

My dad was stationed on Kodiak Island for four years during WWII. One of my earliest memories was a photo of a brown bear they shot with Garands. It was one huge flippin' bear, I mean it dwarfed the soldiers around it, and looked twice as big to a little kid trying to wrap his head around it. Still have the photo album dad put together of Alaska during that time period. Used to beg him to show me those photos...

The guy might me military, but I doubt it. I looked again, and found out that the picture was taken at Funter Bay, across from Hoonah.
I can see taking bear with an '06 round from a Garand, but a .30 caliber from a carbine might be quite a different story. But then, who really knows the story? Alaska Digital Archives doesn't seem to know much about it.

Quick glance at some ballistic tables:

    30 Carbine 110 grain
    1990 FPS muzzle
    967 FTLB energy

So faster than 44 mags and almost as much energy.

    Possible, but not preferable.

You can throw some bullets down with the M1, plus is fairly accurate at close range, good sights for fast shooting and target acquisition. I have one and to be honest isnt my first choice to hunt with lol, but its a blast to plink with.

    Yep... M1 Carbine.

I wouldn't even want to be in the same Borough with a bear shot with one.

Maybe his buddy taking the picture has a real M1 and did the shooting.
