Poor guy is wondering how much it's gonna cost to repair his rifle.

That's Bill - not Morris. The "story" behind the picture? Truly more fun than most will ever realize.

I'm curious did anyone know what caliber the rifle was there ?
Was the guy Deer hunting, maybe irritated the bear more than anything else, with a .243 or something ?

Or was it clear he was Bear hunting or at least armed to kill one if he had to ??

Somebody should have posted that on the Bearanoia thread.......

Could have livened up that discussion even more, if that's possible
Maybe "Nine" wouldn't have got so Ticked,...

No deer in the area when that picture was taken.
Good one about posting the picture! May "Nein" would not have been "..so ticked.."!

That is a lever action, a Winchester, you can see where the reciver bottom goes to flat with the front of the lever.

If the barrels that rusted through, its OLD and been there quite sometime.
Most likely something irritated the Bear with a black powder .45 caliber slug in the wrong place, and wished he had a .243 to do the job..........or have Joe there to shoot it for him with his .50cal double barrel schootzen boomer the same time he shot.
If you can't Kill it with a 30-06, you should Hide.

As I remember, it was a lever action. Probably a ".45/70" - think he left leaning against a tree - couldn't find it in time! (no internet then - or maybe !
Would not have shot "when" he shot - though shortly after would certainly have been a possibility and definitely before he got "et" (if that's what really happened.)

I have seen the actual photo of that picture, it is in Barry's Hangar of "Denali Air Service" he told me the story of it, he mentioned the hunter's name but I forgot. It came to the conclusion that, The hunter was bear hunting shot the bear which was mortally wounded that killed the hunter.

...gotta love a solo Brown bear hunt !!!!!

It's obviously a Savage 99 that Bill Pinell is holding.

For some reason I had 38-55 in my mind but I know not why.

    This was before 243s.

I gave my copy to a friend and have been unable to replace it. Where can I get a print?

Trying to get my head around the mental picture of a 68-year-old man sitting at a keyboard pecking away and trying to select just the right smiley to fit just the right moment in his post.

    Funny as all hell.

Bet it is! Hope I don't have that much "trouble" with avatars (or whatever they are called) when I reach the rip old age of "68"!
Though as much trouble as I'm having with "building a mountain range" those avatars may present more of a problem when I do reach "68" than I'm anticipating.

( In all seriousness - I really am glad your recovered your rifle)
