cube01 read please - SPORT FISHING REGULATIONS SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA.

<< Gear for fly-fishing-only waters: In waters designated as fly-fishing only waters Sportfishing is permitted only as follows: (1) with not more than one unweighted, single-hook fly with gap between point and shank 3/8 or less; (2) weights may be used 18 inches or more ahead of the fly.>>

No worries. I only fish for reds in the valley streams, BELOW the fish and game markers, so I'm good

The problem though is that I see the definition of "artificial fly (unweighted)" to be a fly that weighs less than a quarter oz overall. That's heavier than most of the jigs I throw for steelhead and salmon...

Anyone care to define "constructed by common methods known as flytying..." used in the definition of artificial fly??

"constructed by common methods known as flytying..." The Russian River fly in two packs at Wal-Mart

Other than that from my understanding you must at least have some string attached to a hook.
I have such a hard time trying to decide which outdoor activity to do every chance I get!! Living in AK is a mental challenge

You have to have a fly fishing rod... I'm not sure what weight though.

(P.S. Nothing I have said in this entire thread should be construed as legitimate.)

I prefer something under a couple pounds with the reel, less if I have to hike a long ways from the car to the boardwalk.

Maybe we should see if we can get this thread stickied since it's got such invaluable info? Might cut down on the amount of other 'what weight for reds' posts?

There are currently 3 new/active "What weight for reds" threads in the fly fishing forum (and this one in the fly tying sub-forum, of course.)

Muzzy you and I are the guys fishing for trout next to the guys flipping for reds... Maybe we're missing something??

    ... or maybe not.
