Thread: Fly Swap

  1. #1

    Default Fly Swap

OK I know its winter and everyone is slowly refilling fly boxes.
Would anyone be interested in doing a fly swap?
I would post this in the fly tying sub forum but we don't have one.

I'd be up for one again as long as we have at least a month to get our flies submitted! Are you willing to organize? How about a theme?

Yeah, come up with a theme and a deadline and you'll get a response.

I am new to fly fishing, and even newer to fly tying so this is kind of a newbie question. What is a fly swap and how does it work? My guess is that it is some kind of get together, where everyone exchanges flies that they have tied. Again sorry if this is a dumb question.

Basically everyone ties up a bunch of one pattern - enough for everyone involved to get one fly. Often the fly swaps are capped at around a dozen people so everyone ends up tying around a dozen of one pattern. Then everyone mails/drops off the flies to the person organizing the swap. They in turn divide them up (so everyone gets one fly from everyone else) and then mail them back. You submit a bunch of one pattern and get an assortment in return. Some people include pattern information (name, materials, etc.) on a piece of paper with the fly so other tyers can duplicate the pattern more easily if so inclined.

I'm in for a swap - I've been busy with other stuff and haven't been tying much at all. It'd be a good excuse to make some time at the vise.

I'll even host this one. Get flies to me by the end of February - I'll send everyone involved a PM with my address. We'll try to cap it at 12. So far we've got these people (unless they choose to bow out). That leaves room for 7 more.

I'll welcome suggestions on a theme. In the meantime, I'll throw one out... saltwater flies. It can be a loose theme, but immediate ideas are baitfish, shrimp, prawn, smolt patterns. Thinking sea-run dollies and cuts, estuary cohos and pinks, etc. Or get creative and take a saltwater pattern and adapt it to freshwater - streamers for trout, salmon, or pike. If someone's got another idea, post up!

I'm in as well - I have been trying to find one to be a part of for the last couple months. A nymph or dry fly theme would be more useful in terms of flies I would actually use though (as opposed to salt water).

P.S. Bowdy, check your inbox space, I get this message when responding to your message:

I love tying and fishing nymphs as well. So how about Stonefly Nymphs as our theme?

That puts the list as follows (let me know if you want to opt out):
    Wyo2AK
    GUZ
    Wyatt
    scott_rn
    bowdy
    cube
    border collies

That makes 7. Room for 5 more.

    Inbox cleared.....

You know, there doesn't have to be a theme.....we could just tie 12 of whatever and go with it.

I like the stonefly nymph theme, but I'm up for a free for all as well. (I'll be tying a stonefly nymph either way :-P)

Wyo, what do you think of a free for all?

Fine by me... just trying to appeal to the masses and facilitate this in whatever way I can to make it actually happen. I tie 'em all.

And since I hijacked GUZ's thread anyway, I'm not going to be laying down the law about anything. haha

Here's a theme... no dolly llamas and no woolly buggers!!

Sounds awesome. As I just started tying this winter, I don't want to participate because my flies are laughable at this point!

I'd love to see a thread with all the pics after the swap is done, though!
Thank God for people who don't fish!! Not much would get done without them =)

ok... I'm in as well... gotta get to tying again and all this rain has got me itchin for some fishn!

I think Neverborn wanted in on this one, too... his Spey flies were quite inspiring last year.

My vote on a theme would be Baitfish patterns...
