I prefer to put my bait in cover as thick as possible...

I you take anything from this thread take this quote to heart. I have been chasing blackies in Alaska fo 8 years now and I have learned mostly by trial and error. The thicker and deeper into the woods you get the bigger the bears. I hunt in an area where there is a high volume of hunters and bait barrels around every corner, most of the bears i see come out of the area are just off of mommas tit. The key to success is to get away from the 4 wheeler path and get into the woods. This doesnt mean you have to fly out to some remote area. My favorite stand is 36 miles from Palmer and maybe 4 miles from the closest town in a straight line distance and we see bears like this every year and I can get to the stand every nite with no problem.

Find an area that is really really thick and dense preferably with a cleary some place in the center. It doesnt really matter if you see alot of sign or not. If you put the bait out the bears will come.

I try to find game trails that lead into thick stuff. Helps when your dad has a plane and love to fly his son around scouting. The site that I have a picture of had so many differant bears on it. I found that one by air.
