Default ? regarding Birchwood shooting range

I have been meaning to post this question some time ago but life got busy and it was delayed. Before Christmas I was listening to the 6 o'clock news and heard a little blurp about the Anchorage Mayor looking for more money so they could buy and build/improve a police shooting range/tactical range. They mentioned that the police department was already renting the use of a facility in Birchwood and that this would be the targeted property. The location given puts it at Birchwood Shooting Range if my directions are right. They also mentioned that this facility would be for police/tactical use only and not open to the public. Has anyone else heard this, or are my ears just getting old. I am mostly concerned with the thought of losing one this range for public use.

    thanks for your time

That'd be sweet, but lame if not shared with the public. Having a facility like that would be rad! I'm still looking to do a trip with the wife to AZ or OR to take classes at such facilities...

    Hi Sigi,

As I understand it, the range would have been built near the public range and not on top (thus closing our access).

The Police range would not be a public range. However, it's become a moot point as the request got downsized from the funds needed to build it ... to a "paltry" million or so to do a study on building it. (Hey, give me the Mil and I'll tell ya if APD needs a range or not. )

The last attempt to close Birchwood Shooting Range that I remember (in the late 1980s ), was when the nearby airport wanted to expand and wanted the range condemned so they could use it for a new runway.

    Cheers,

    David

I heard this also. I think they were wanting to spend $18mil on the new range. Seems like a lot for a few berms unless it was to be an indoor range, then it just seems like the typical government over spend.
