    Default Valdez in July???

Heading for a week long Lodge fishing experience in the Valdez area the last week of July ~ 2011. I'd like to fly into Valdez two or three days early and do some fresh water fishing. Open to species, also open to fly or gear...just looking for a freshwater adventure. Any advice or information. Also will need lodging, hotel, motel, cabin, etc?
    Thanks in advance.

Limited local fresh water choices without a charter. Robe River will fill your need for Pink Salmon there is public access near the cemetary there is also limited Dolly Vardern fishing on the Robe and I do mean limited during that time of year. Another option is fishing Blueberry Lake which is 15 or so miles out of town. If you don't mind driving a bit more the Tieckle River has again limited Dolly fishing.

Bob Summers from Fear Knot Charters might be a good call if your looking for options in the area. To be honest if your chasing Fresh Water Fishing in Valdez you might wish to take a charter to a location that offers more options from Valdez. If you look in to Cordova you have many many more options to fish Fresh Water and would have more option concerning species to include, Dollies, Cutts, Pink and Red Salmon as well.

Listed below is Bob's Web Site he is a stand up guy and will give you the skinny on your questions concerning your lodging question and may be able to help you a little with Fresh water Choices.

    BullMoose,
Thanks for the insight. Sounds like Cordova might be a better initial stop. Can a person self guide themselves in the Cordova freshwater arena? How available is lodging?
    Thanks,

Not sure if Valdez is a deal break or not but Cordova would be a better bet for fresh H20 fishing. I grew up in Valdez and though there's opportunities for the local crowd to play in I wouldn't say its a fresh H20 destination for those making a long trip. Hit Cordova, call Steve Ranney @ Orca Adventure Lodge, great guy. He'll hook you up w/what ever you need. Has planes, boats and an old cannery w/rooms.

Good idea! Lots of opportunities there, if driving out of Valdez was a goal than that opens up a whole new ballgame.

So what species would be in the fresh in Cordova in late July? Pinks? Coho? Dolly's??? Rainbows???? If it's not a Pink year does that mean that there will be only a small return of Pinks, or is it still an active fishery?
    Thanks again,
    Troy
