    Default Spring bear

Planning a trip to prince of wales island next spring and was looking for advice on the best method for bowhunting, spot and stalk or bait. Leaning towards using a truck from the road system versus boat from ocean. Thanks for any insite, Tyler

Bait is very effective for hunting bears, but the problem with it on a short trip is that it can take some time to draw bears into your bait (and to set up the station to begin with). Baiting is great if you live near the area or will at least be visiting it multiple times over the course of a few weeks, but given a limited time frame, spot and stalk is likely a better use of your time and efforts.

Thanks Brian, the more we get into setting dates and arrangements we will probably only have 5 hunting days so bait would be a long shot. We have never hunted black bears, how hard are they to get in bow range compared to other big game? What are the strengths of bears, sight, sound, smell?

If you can get a bear feeding on the beach, getting in bow range is reasonably doable. They're feeding machines when they're first out in the spring, so they're somewhat distracted by eating. As for their strengths, their sense of smell is phenomenal, but their eyesight is relatively poor.

have predator call or fawn bleat call. can work real good but you have to call constantly.....you stop and they are losing interest.
