Default Montague Island Deer in December

My wife and I are going deer hunting on Montague Island (San Juan Bay) in early December and have never gone before. I'm curious if anyone reading this has recently hunted that area and could share what deer numbers are like and/or have advice for a new blacktail hunter.

    Thanks, Rob

Ive hunted Port Chalmers in late November in the past, some decent activity but the snow was getting deep in the hills. We actually had our best luck in the brush although we were not well armed for it. I swear if I go back and hunt that area again I'll bring a shotgun and 000 Buck with me, fast shots at close range. Actually used my .44 more than my rifle. I did get one at about 10 feet staring straight at me, not sure who was more surprised at that meeting, but I know who was better armed!

Oh, btw the bears were still out and working the beaches. We ended up losing one that we had burried in the snow because of the tide. Watch your weather, we came off it in gale force winds, not a fun ride.

I'm sure the deer will be close to the beach by then. The real challenge will be the WX letting you get to the island, and home again. Good luck!

Well I have been Rick Rolled as lujon once put it. Earlier today I was going to spend thanksgiving on montague with my dad and brother... Now my butt flying to Ketchikan for work as a last minute fill in for sick boss! I get back in time but just can't leave the family for any more time. I have not even unpacked from my trip to Tennessee. (10 pm call to be told your on an 8 am flight sucks) oh well putting dinner on the table in another way. Good luck out there

I think I would just take my rifle and gear to KTN and then take a ferry over to the island and shoot some deer.

There are only a few spots on the North side that are the closest to either whittier or Seward all the other spots to harbor up this time of year are on the East side of the island. If i was back in the area i would try the north end harbor sites.
    Good luck and happy hunting.

That was one of the first things I pondered but I can't make it happen. I will be there over a week with no days without appointments. Got to turn the phone off flight attendant might just have a heart attack. Cheers hason

We ran down to San Juan for a quick weekend trip. Weather was nice. We packed cold weather gear but were pleasantly surprised to find the temps around 40. There is only a light dusting of snow on the tops.
