Most of my choices are usually the same, but this year we're agonizing over whether to apply for the guaranteed Tier I tag. It would be great to have a sure-thing hunt, but the question is whether we're willing to commit to Unit 13 for moose. I do some hunting up there, but it sure is nice to be able to hunt moose close to home when I only have a morning. The nice thing, though, is that it might free up time to hunt other critters such as bear and goats. Ah...choices, choices. Thank God I have so many options instead of just rotating between whitetails and turkey!

Wildlife/hunting is currently down. Fisheries and some other areas are available.

Well, isnt that a big increase in number of brown bear permits for the Kenai? It looks like 35 total!
I come home with an honestly earned feeling that something good has taken place. It makes no difference whether I got anything, it has to do with how the day was spent. Fred Bear

I made my own copy and have already highlighted it in 4 colors with chicken-scratch notes scrawled all over.

I believe the deadline is Dec 31st online, Nov 30th through the mail.

I have a question...I know it says you can only apply for 3 hunts per species. So i was wondering is that strictly drawing permits, or if i apply for a tier II moose permit, can I only apply for 2 moose drawing permits?

    Thanks

You can ONLY apply for 3 tags total for one species.
2 draw and 1 Tier II OR 3 draw and 0 Tier II.

Good luck all, I'm golden every three years so, 2011 is the biggin'!

Are you sure about that, Curt? I was under the impression that Tier II tags don't count against the application limit for the drawing. It is a completely different system. I know folks that hold both Tier and Drawing permits for caribou this year. They can only legally fill one of the permits, but they were awarded both and can choose which one to hunt.

See, that is why I asked. Because while reading the regs I wasn't sure whether the Tier II counted towards a permit for that species. I would have to get my applications thrown out for applying for too many. I am thinking I might call or go into F&G.

I could of sworn that you can not. Read it on the tier II sup.? If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. I'm headed to F&G in 10 minutes so I'll ask.

For what it's worth, it won't apply to the Nelchina caribou this year either way. Since it went to the special Tier I rules, if you apply for it, you can't apply for any caribou drawing tags at all, let alone being concerned about 2 vs. 3 choices. Still, there are some Tier II moose tags out there, so it would be good information to have.

I am wrong. Just talked with F&G. You CAN apply for 3 moose drawings AND apply for Tier II moose. If you draw both, you may ONLY harvest 1 moose.

Personally, I wouldn't hog up the chances by applying for both. Choose one or the other as to not be stingy, but, to each his own. Good luck!
