if you can find a copy of "alaska's saltwater fishes and other sea life" by doyne kessler grab it, it's out of print, but one of the best guides.
"pacific fishes of canada" by hart has a lot of overlap, but is a wealth of information.
"the rockfishes of the northeast pacific" (illustrated by ray troll) and "probably more than you want to know about the fishes of the pacific coast" both by milton love are also worth having.
"marine life of the pacific northwest" by lamb and hanby is a beautiful full color reference, with great photos of nearly everything you can imagine.

I keep a copy of this on board. I agree, it's a great reference. I got my copy (used) at "Title Wave Books" in ANC. Check their website at http://www.wavebooks.com. I was going to suggest it but I couldn't remember the exact title. It probably wouldn't go very far to say "the one with the blue cover".

Try Amazon.com for Alaska's Saltwater Fishes and Other Sea Life. When I checked they had it for $59.95 used.

I just looked on Amazon and they were $140 to $280. I called Title Wave and they had the book for $28.95, so I got it. I asked how many they had and was told I got the last one. They did say they get them in some times and would take names if anyone was interested.

Another good one is Coastal Fish Identification: California to Alaska by Paul Humann.

I like to read a lot. Next to the local libraries, Title Wave is one of my favorites. When I purchased my copy of the Kessler book, they had a large number of other publications in the same section. I ended up with a few.

Excellent advice on the books Homerdave. I'd throw one more out there. It's only in hardback but if you can ever get your hands on one thi book is simply the best. I call it the blue bible of fish ID in Alaska.

Came across a copy of "Alaska's Saltwater Fishes and Other Sea Life" by Doyne Kessler, that I purchased awhile back off of eBay. This actually is a Discarded book from the Anchorage Library. It's in decent shape except for the last couple of pages, it also has the stamps from the library. Add .05 to the price that Muttley Crew Fishing has in his post.... If anyone is interested in this book send me a PM.
