Default "Bumblebee" yellow halibut caught near Atka

Some interesting photos were posted on the Deckboss blog today of a partially yellow halibut caught near Atka. No word on the cause for the unique coloration, but I figured it was worth sharing the pictures.

Thats just nasty! I don't like the looks of how the membranes between the fins and tail look. I think that baby has been eating to many of those Kamchatka crabs.

I am sure they were some shade of "Brown" when they came to their final resting place in the Outhouse.

    Three options that I see:

    A) Genetic or birth defect either caused by early trauma to the egg or mutated gamates(sp?)
    B) "Scarring" caused by high concentration of pollutants that the larvae floated through. (unlikely since a concentration high enough to burn would have fried the gills and ultimately killed the fish.
    C) Dang, I forot what option "C" was.

I think A was the most probable. Similar to "albino" the pigment cells in the skin aren't producing the dark coloring. (I know "Thank you Captain Obvious")
I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

A little google it says Amchitka was the largest underground nuclear testing site in history. Pretty crazy.

Boy do I remember that, Anchorage was wall to wall Genuine Hippies camped on the Denali Park Strip, really thousands. It looked like "Woodstock". And Richard Nixon stopped off on the way to, or from some place, and drove down 4th avenue in a open top limo. That was about 9 years after the 64' quake, and there was a lot of speculation as to what might happen when they lit that bomb off, would the rest of Turnagain fall into the sea.

That is a strange looking 'Butt. I wish there was a pic of the "white side". I wonder if that was mutated as well. A couple years ago someone on my boat caught one that was completely black on the top side and mottled black on the white side. We released it, the general consensus being "I'm not eating that".

It looks like a China Rockfish mated with a halibut. Impossible....but that's what it looks like.
