    Default Boat problems

I have a 30 foot fiberglass boat [ 1987 ] with a cummins 5.9 diesel and twin disk trany. when i shift into foward or reverse the boat moves but makes alot of noise like somthing is loose but as soon as I apply just a little throtle it quiets down and runs smooth. Any mechanics out there have any sugestions on what the problem is?

Loose/worn rudder post, loose shaft coupling, worn cutlass bearing, loose prop maybe something in the trans?? Do it at the dock and get in there and start looking for the problem.

Any U-Joints in that assembly? They tend to make a lot of noise when going out.

Could be something completely unrelated to the transmission/drive train. I once had a similar issue and found that a bushing in the steering system was worn to the point it allowed enough play to make an awful lot of racket...until I advanced the throttle, then the rattle went away. Best to have someone at the controls and someone else down below listening and checking until the source is found. Don't wait till it breaks hard!

Could be a failed damper plate...

Could be that pair of channel locks you lost a while back.

    Sorry just couldnít resist.

But seriously, I found my lost Leatherman way up in the air intake of my snow machine once, donít know how in the hell it got there. The engine sure ran better after removing it.
