    Default Modified Bear rug question

I shot a large black bear in the spring on Kuiu. The front paws and the face were rather rubbed. My taxi is shipping it back to me for further evaluation before I commit to a full rugging. I'm considering stretching it, shaping it, backing and felting minus head and extremities. It will still have somewhat of a critter shape but no head or paws. I could genuinely use for a rug then.

Do any of you have experience with this rug option? Any suggestions for backing or felting?

It was a large Black bear but the face is just knarly looking. How many of you would just mount the thing, head and all?

    Thanks

My Dad shot an old bruiser in PWS with similar rubs and a scarred up mug. After I rugged it, I brushed black hair dye into the rubs. It looks fine. Personally, I would rug it in its entirety if it were mine. Another option would be a 3/4 mount. That would be cool, too.

Wow, that bad boy looks like he is ready for a part in a John Candy movie!

Just a reg-lar round bear rug would be nice for setting in front of a cabin fireplace

I would just tan it and hold out for a better looking full coat to do a rug for the wall. It is never gonna look any better even with dye.

Well, decison made. Full rug, head and all. My wife stands by her decison to enjoy it, knarly and all. I guess, time will tell how the taxi will clean this ol' bad boy up. His body and hind legs were great, it's just that crazy face. They can't all be young fuzzy beauties.

Spoiled One is right. I shot one a while back with a few rubs on the flanks. After I got the rug back from the taxi, I used black leather dye directly on the skin in the rubbed areas. The skin itself was light tan which really accentuated the rubs, but once I dyed the skin black, the rubs essentially disappeared.

    That bear has character!

Here is a field photo of his face. This was a tough decision for me.
