Default Fly fishing on a budget?

Well ive been a fly fishing fanatic but most at my cost. Were not short on money but my dad wants everything in a resonable price. I already got my rod and reels all setup. Just looking into were to find good quality flys that arents outragous. Just looking to fill up a few fly boxes for silvers and bows/char. I know i know i tie flys but by no means am i that good. So any good places to look? I always browse alaska fly fishing goods but seems sorta high but who am i to say.

Cheap is just that - cheap.

You can buy discount flies on crappy hooks and maybe get a day or two out of them before they fall apart, or you can buy quality flies and fewer of them.

    Just an observation.

You want affordable flies that are decent, check out the Hill's Discount Flies website mentioned above. Got lots of flies from them over the years and they are decent (most the time). They don't hold a candle to what you will buy from Alaska Fly Fishing Goods, but you are asking for cheap flies. Hill's is where I would fill my fly box if I was on a budget. Or 2 days into high school like you. Ha ha...

I know some of the discount places can have cheap stuff, Blue Cafe. Hook one fish and throw the fly away, but I swear by Hills & Discount Flies.
I found Discount flies to be my better bet, but they are only about 2 miles away from my house so can pick up a same day. The get their stuff from Sri Lanka and I use for my daily trout fishing. Landed over a dozen rainbows yesterday on the same fly before I broke it off

You really want Alaska Fly Fishing Goods. Not only are you going to get the best possible product but also great customer service and you will be supporting a very passionate; very cool Alaskan business. If you have questions they are very good about getting back to you either over the phone or e-mail. At the very least put a small order together through them and try out their stuff, you will not be disappointed.

Mossy's and WorldWide Angler both sell the same brand of flies as AFFG, so you have a couple local options as well.

    There is your problem.

Pawn the iphone; then you'll have plenty of money to shop at AK fly fishing goods.

I am not saying that. But if I was 14 and had an iPhone, I would need a screen protector for sure

Tying isn't hard - tell your old man to spring for some good tying equipment. Check out when AK Fly Fishers is going to run a clinic - or any of the other clinics that happen during the winter & learn how to do it (check with World Wide or Mossies or 3-Rivers). If you dedicate a couple of hours a week from Nov - March, you'll have more flies than you'll use in a season.
And it will help keep you out of trouble. If you mention this to your Dad, he'll probably run right out to get you what you need. .

Honestly you dont need a fly shop in your back pack when you go out. Search the forums. There is a go to short list you'll notice reoccuring post after post after post. All of them are easy flies to tie, and they work, time after time after time!!!

A smart man would. Just the kind of think you hope your 14 year old son will get interested in. Good clean fun. I don't know much about it, but hope my kids do.

What you do is get some fly tying lessons, and in no time at all you will be tying good fish able flies. I tied my own flies for a lot of years with less then good success at it. Than about 1980 when fly fishing really started to take off, I took some lessons. 1000% improvement before the course was even done. Then I had the chance to take some lessons with Dick Talleur back in the early 90's. Well worth the effort to do. You will become better at it the more you do it, over time.
